Level the Playing Field is a new sculptural work created by artist Sophie Mahon exploring and incorporating the responses of 6000 school children in St Helens, collected through postcards, as part of #DearStHelens. #DearStHelens asked the children of our town: ‘what does a child-friendly borough look like and feel like to live in?’

A large stained glass panel stands tall on a grey/white plinth. The panel stands in a room surrounded by large windows and the light shines through the colourful panel, illuminating it's pattern.
The bottom section of a colourful stained glass panel stands in a shadowy room. Sunlight illuminates sections of the colourful glass.

The sculpture represents children and young people’s collective concerns and hopes for the future, with text and imagery taken directly from their responses.

The sculpture embodies age-old issues of inequality and unequal access to opportunity as well as concerns for the future of our planet, as such it has been designed to appear both traditional and futuristic.
