Inspired by and connected to Strong Women, we have collaborated with Interference Art and KS2 students to create three free educational resources.
These resources encourage children to seek out and celebrate the untold histories of women in St Helens and Knowsley, shining a light on the gaps in documented local heritage and an opportunity to explore the contributions of women, trans and non-binary people in street art globally.
Each resource includes a training element for teachers to ensure they are confident when delivering the resources within the classroom.
Resource One: Our Strong Women
This resource guides teachers and students through local history, encouraging children to take an interest in the stories of their community. Taking examples from St Helens, the resource includes rich histories told through women’s voices and where women had a major impact. With this resource we hope to show that history is for everyone and that we all have a story to tell. We ask: who are your Strong Women?
The outcome of this resource is a classroom display board. We’ve included bunting and prompt cards for teachers to cut out with your class. There is a teacher’s guide which includes a lesson plan and signposts towards additional resources. The activities have been designed so that they can be completed within half a school day, or stretched out across a longer period and provide focus for a ‘history month’ or local celebration.
Co-created by Interference Art with Year 4 children from Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School, Parr, St Helens, this resource explores women’s histories in St Helens for the KS2 history curriculum. As part of this resource the children learnt how to design and conduct an interview of a local strong women (at Holy Spirit Catholic Primary, they interviewed their teacher, Carol Sharrock).

Resource Two: Strong Women in Local History (Knowsley)
Through this resource, you and your class can explore how the Second World War changed local places and people's lives, including the roles played by women, and how local land was used. Help document and share the stories of strong women in our community today.

Resource Three: Stories On Walls
Through this resource, students will learn about public art (particularly by women and nonbinary artists), explore how it connects to communities and create their own artwork celebrating the diversity of their school.
This resource is designed to be used in KS2 classes. It has been co-created by artists, subject leads for PSHE, British Values and Art & Design, and Year 4 pupils. The resource will guide your class through a project that aims to support conversations about Protected Characteristics and British Values through the lens of public art.
The activities have been designed so that they can be completed within a school day or across several shorter lessons.
