Since early 2023, we have worked with students from both De La Salle and Gateacre schools, guiding them through their Arts Award Bronze. Our producer Nat Hughes has used the Arts Award framework to inspire workshops with the students. Together they have explored Heart of Glass' work in relation to themes such as personal identity and community.

Students have had the opportunity to learn about print- and zine-making through bespoke workshops with artist Kate Hodgson, and have enjoyed trips to cultural venues such as Tate Liverpool, Open Eye Gallery and The Working Class Movement Library.

As part of their Arts Award course, each student has made a zine exploring a topic that they’re passionate about. The themes covered have been wide and varied, encompassing everything from family history to addressing the climate crisis.

To mark the end of the Arts Award the students plan and organise a skill share event for their school friends and teaching staff to attend. Here, the skills learnt as part of the Arts Award journey are passed on and personal achievements are celebrated.

Each iteration of an Arts Award course is unique and designed to respond to the group’s interests. Heart of Glass combine our expertise and creative networks to support young people’s artistic exploration, building confidence and creativity.
