Semay Wu
Semay Wu - music maker mash - is a Scotland-based composer, media/sound artist, improviser and cellist. Absorbed by free improvisational frameworks, Semay brings a unique interdisciplinary approach to her work as an intuit explorer of meshing boundaries. She is the mother-founder of a non-profit organisation, New Emergences, from 2018, in The Netherlands. This exists to cultivate the re-balancing of voices in the fields of electronics, contemporary music and digital culture.
Working often as a cellist for various projects, Semay is also a producer of a wide range of her own work: graphic scores, audio/video-pieces, score-based work, performance interactive-installations, exhibition-theatre-dance pieces, as well as producing an online audio cookbook for Manchester’s communities: Sounds Like Scran. Performances range from electroacoustic solo sets to current collaborations with Skye Reynolds (dance), Seth Bennett (double bass), Juana Adcock (poet), and larger groups: Ubu Warp Cheer, New String Collective and GIO.
Since 2022, Semay has regularly released solo material: Raspberry Hotel (Akashic Records, 2022), Sharmanka & Unsteady Stones (Scatter Archive, 2023 & 2024), and Unsteady Stones/The Spinal Cactus #001 (self-released, 2024).
