Masterclass inspires St Helens glassmaker

Back to News

St Helens artist, Sarah Cable is already benefitting from having the opportunity to observe, meet and learn from one of the world’s greatest glassmakers and masters of Venetian glass making techniques.

Sarah was awarded a Prototype Projects commission to travel and attend the International Glass Festival and Glass Biennale 2015 in Stourbridge – a prestigious juried exhibition that showcases some of the best of British glass art made in the past two years.

She attended a glassblowing masterclass led by American glass artists Dante Marioni and Janusz Pozniak. Dante is a master of Venetian glass making techniques; a style of glass blowing that differs greatly from the English style of making that Sarah learnt at the beginning of her career. Sarah said: “this was a once in a life time opportunity to learn directly from one of the world’s greatest, and it has helped me expand my visual and technical vocabulary, which not only helps my practice but, improves my ability to use glass as a form of self expression”.

“Dante is one of the most respected and well know glassmakers in the world and I was very excited to have the opportunity to meet him, because he rarely visits the UK”.

“Dante and Janusz have worked together for 25 years and the class not only demonstrated their immense skill as glassmakers, but also the connection they have working together. Glass making at this level is not a solitary pursuit and working as part of a team is the only way to reach your true creative potential.”

Sarah has since gone on to create new artwork using a Venetian cane making technique, a completely new way of working for her as an artist. As a result of making this piece, Sarah has recently been commissioned to make a lighting piece for interior designers, Definitive 1 in Liverpool.

Debbie Chan, Prototype Projects Producer of Heart of Glass is extremely delighted with Sarah’s progress over the last six months and hopes this is the first of many commissions to follow that will help develop her profile as a glass artist.

Sarah Cable’s new glass artwork will be exhibited in St Helens in early 2016. For more details and to be kept up-to-date on other commissions like these, please sign up to our newsletter.
